JEA and human rights

A weekend meeting was held on 21-22 February at Rosary School, Vadodara. It was directed by Fr Charles Aruldas, JEA Secretary, and attended by 30 Jesuits actively engaged in the educational apostolate. Unlike the former business-like sessions, this meeting focused on the themes of PEACE, HUMANRIGHTS AND COMMUNAL HARMONY – the JEA targets for 2009.

The meeting began with a short prayer service on the theme of PEACE conducted by Fr Nixon Macwan. The resourcepersons, Frs Francis Parmar, Cedric Prakash and P DMathew, gave the members wonderful insights and inputs on the selected themes. Francis began the proceedings with a well prepared Power-Point presentation.

On Sunday, we began with prayer led by Fr Francis Macwan. Cedric then continued from where Francis Parmar left. He brought to our immediate attention the many factual errors and historical distortions and omissions in the current Text Books of Gujarat Board which are done systematically and deliberately to suit their party and Hindu Ideologies much to the disadvantage of the minorities. We discussed about promoting PEACE, COMMUNAL HARMONY AND HUMAN RIGHTS in our Educational Institutions. Several useful suggestions were given and were taken note of. It was the unanimous decision of the group that the declaration of the human rights be printed in all our school calendars. And also to have a programme on a big scale on 10 December 2009 (60th Anniversary of HUMAN RIGHTS DAY). P D Mathew gave us a wonderful interpretation of Human Rights against the background of Christian Concept and Spirituality.

The weekend meeting finally concluded with lunch, during which Fr Chelston Dias, on behalf of all the members, thanked the Rosary Community, particularly Fr Packiam for their hospitality.

Fr Chelston Dias.
